Fine Arts Building
The College of Marin’s Fine Arts Building was developed as a solution to the complex site constraints and programmatic needs of the campus. Day lighting determines the structure’s massing, with a single-story wing oriented north-south and crossed by a three-story bar of classrooms and studios.
The ground floor holds offices, storage spaces, and studios with access to outdoor workspace and to the open plaza. The second level features an extensive roof garden, additional studios and a lecture room. Additional facilities occupying the third floor include additional studios, a printmaking shop, a computer lab and a darkroom.
A mild local climate allowed designers to use open-air walkways for circulation, maximizing classroom space while still providing access to daylight and natural ventilation. Thanks to the building’s high air quality, energy and water efficiency, solar orientation and materials use, the project is expected to receive a LEED Gold certification.
