House in the High Desert
Nestled amidst the majestic environment of the vast natural vistas of the American West, yet not unduly remote, the House in the High Desert satisfies its owners quest for open space, simple shapes, and materials that seamlessly connect with the environment. Located on the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada range, the allure of the site includes magnificent panoramas from the high desert terrain featuring rugged topography, striking rock outcrops and sage brush. Cradled within this milieu, is an inspiringly quaint family home, studio and gallery for a photographer and his art. The design physically delineates the program into a linear arrangement of modules, interposed with trellised courtyards and bridged linkages, flaunting generous courtyards along this linear configuration. The long, narrow composition of architectural forms is wrapped on three sides with a tranquil terraced pool, and provides profound connections to the engulfing nature with its dramatic views of the mountain backdrop above, and Reno city lights below.
