The house was conceived as the artists’ haven for contemplation, creation and renewal. Surrounding tree-covered hills inspired the building’s form, siting and materials. Wood harvested from the site is used in the structural system, finishes and casework. The selective use of trees from the site has the environmental benefits of mitigating fire hazard, reducing the material carbon footprint, and enhancing the health of the forest.
The elongated wood, glass and galvanized aluminum loft space is oriented for solar exposure and views. The south facing arcade shades windows in the summer but allows wintertime warmth and light. The north façade’s minimal fenestration affords privacy from the road, and highlights the stairway which cantilevers from the Redwood siding like a silver corrugated saddle bag.
